| Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 2024: John Mayer, Saugeen and Flying Tourbillon
The [b]best luxury replica watches[/b] and wonders we’ve been waiting for for the rest of the year are coming. However, Audemars Piguet plays by its own set of rules. On Thursday, at the new Audemars Piguet House in Milan, CEO Ilaria Resta presided over the launch of more than a dozen new models. Let’s start with the most obvious and perhaps the most unexpected release, the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar made in collaboration with top watch enthusiast and singer-songwriter John Mayer.
The dial of the new 26574BC features a never-before-used texture called “Crystal Sky” that almost looks like a rock and faceted derivative of the classic hand-hammered Tuscan finish we’ve seen on various vintage Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar dials. At first glance, it looks incredible, and I have no doubt that photos don’t do it justice. On top of the gorgeous dial, it’s fitting that Mayer decided to color the week indicator blue, as well as doing away with the red “31” on the date subdial to allow for an unobstructed view of the depicted crystal night sky. To allow the wearer to still recognize the difference between the “31” and the “1” on the date subdial, the 3 and 1 in the “31” are marked up and down, respectively. These are some of my favorite understated touches, and the decision to keep the dial all in blue is something I find very appealing. This watch is also the last Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar to feature the famous 5134 caliber, which was first used in 2015 and marked the beginning of the modern era of Audemars Piguet’s perpetual calendar. Ultimately, everything about this watch stems from the inner vision of John Mayer, who originally proposed designing it (or something like it) as a one-of-a-kind piece. Bennahmias, then CEO, suggested producing it as a limited edition, and that's what we have today. Only 200 pieces of this masterpiece will be produced, and if you have the chance to own one in person, you might just know who you are.
Royal Oak Automatic Flying Tourbillon Skeleton Ref. 26735SG.OO.1320SG.01
Two years ago, the brand launched this steel model to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Royal Oak.
This time AP brings a new gold hue to the reference, which they call "Sand Gold". It's hard to fully understand this color from the pictures, because sometimes it looks like white gold and sometimes it looks like rose gold. But I guess that's the point; it's neither, and both at the same time. This hue is perfect for bridging the gap between those who wear all metals and materials and those who avoid anything that's not white (steel or platinum, etc.). To achieve this sandy color, silver was removed from the gold mixture and replaced with palladium.

Another spectacular flying tourbillon joins the party. The AP R&D team has a difficult task to create innovative and revolutionary advances in watchmaking through rare and limited-production pieces. The third piece in the collection (RD#3) is a combination of an ultra-thin movement and a flying tourbillon. The Ref. 26660BC takes the 37mm RD#3 to the next level with 12 baguette-cut diamonds on its smoked blue checkered dial and 32 on its bezel. There are 2.2 carats of diamonds on this white gold beauty, which makes them even more striking than on a larger case like the 41mm. Perhaps surprisingly, this is probably my favorite model.

If you still want a flying tourbillon, but skeletonized or ultra-thin designs are too much for you, don’t worry, Audemars Piguet has a solution. I never thought I’d say these words, but two “normal” flying tourbillons have been added to the catalog.
The Ref. 26730 has always been the brand’s top-of-the-line model, and they’ve produced a variety of gorgeous variations. In 2020, a titanium version of the model arrived, featuring a sandblasted blue dial surrounded by a white minute track. This year continues that theme with a rose gold model that features the same sandblasted dial, but in a light grey with an ivory minute track.
In addition to this, AP has also introduced a stainless steel version with a blood-red smoked dial, very similar to what we saw on the 16202XT that we released last year. As I and other purists know, there’s something strangely appealing about not having a checkered dial on a Royal Oak, and this also usually results in a much smaller production run of the watch.

The recent introduction of a yellow gold model is a welcome addition and the seventh different material for this model, which is one of the reasons why it stands out so well in my opinion. Available in steel, rose gold, black ceramic, white gold, brushed white gold, brushed yellow gold and now plain yellow gold, it is probably the most diverse model in the entire catalogue – and that’s not even taking into account the different dial and strap options available on each material.
In addition to the yellow gold case and bracelet, the 16202BA also features a yellow gold checkered dial with a gradient black smoked effect that makes the hour markers clearly visible and improves legibility. For me, this dial is one of the most beautiful that the brand has introduced in recent years and pairs perfectly with yellow gold, which seems to be making a well-deserved return to the Royal Oak collection.

Since its launch in 2022, the 39mm Ref.16204 has been a collector’s dream as it perfectly combines two of AP’s most important and successful features: ultra-thin jumbo and movement skeletonization at the highest level. Any collector knows that getting a Royal Oak at retail that meets one of these requirements is a huge coup, so you can start to imagine how exclusive it is to own both.
The new model features a white gold case and bracelet, replacing the existing stainless steel model, while also being available in yellow and rose gold. Personally, I have always preferred gold watches to steel because they have more weight and density, and even more so in skeleton watches because they are inherently lighter. Therefore, I think it is a good move for AP to only offer the 16204 in yellow gold, especially considering that this is a particularly unique reference that comes with a high price and high status for the client. The white and rose gold versions differ from the steel and yellow gold versions because they feature dark grey movements, rather than movements that match the colour of the material. The 37mm Ref. 15550 is often found in the grey area because it is suitable for both men and women, depending on your wrist size. Obviously, if you’re LeBron James and you make the Offshore look like a lady’s piece, then probably not. But for someone like me with very thin wrists, 37mm has always proven to be a great canvas, especially as an entry point to an exclusive brand.
Okay, you probably won’t be looking at the new Ref. 15550 as an entry-level model – with its brushed yellow gold case and bracelet, it’s anything but an entry-level model. The brushed finish is the result of repeatedly hand-hammering the case and bracelet with diamond tools, which is very labor-intensive and time-consuming. The brushed look pairs well with AP’s choice to retain the brushed case sides and polished beveled edges, creating a masterful sense of lightness in handling. Beyond that, the dial follows the style of the 26240BA and 16202BA I mentioned earlier: a yellow gold checkered pattern with a smoky black gradient. Need I say more about how much I love this dial and material combination? I guess not.

Audi also brings us a new Royal Oak Offshore for those who prefer a larger, sportier watch. The 43mm stainless steel case adds a blue rubber bezel with an almost matte texture, but certainly not frosted. While this watch from Audemars Piguet does look unusual, we have also seen this design before on the “rubber-covered” Offshore watch introduced in 2002. Rubber bezels always emphasize the sporty feel of the watch, but are more susceptible to damage after long-term use.
To complete the theme, the new Offshore watch comes with a blue rubber strap and a smoked blue Méga Tapisserie dial.
